Book, Music & Lyrics by Jonathan Larson | Directed by Dave Steakley | Musical Direction by Allen Robertson

Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of New York City bohemia when ZACH transports you to the lively East Village where performance artists, musicians, and hipsters of all persuasions band together to revolt against convention. The artist squatters have taken over the theatre and have created an environment in which you are fully surrounded by Austin’s finest rock vocalists and musicians and visual artists’ creative expressions of sculptural whimsy. And when Mimi locks eyes with Roger, and Angel spies Colin, and Maureen tugs at Joanne this rock opera ignites sparks of love that redefine what family can be. Viva la vie boheme!

ZACH – Austin’s Theatre and Texas’ longest running theatre company presents METAMORPHOSES, a visually stunning live theatre experience based the myths of Ovid with the audience seated intimately around a circular pool of water. Ovid’s beautiful stories of transformation soar in a visually stunning production featuring aerialists from Blue Lapis Light in amazing flights of fancy. This humorous, imaginative and heart-felt adaptation of classic mythology reveals the power in our capacity to love and change. METAMORPHOSES  was written and originally directed by Mary Zimmerman. ZACH’s production is directed by Dave Steakley.

“This play explores love in its many forms,” said Director Dave Steakley. “Its stories are timeless, allowing them to endure and carry significant meaning for us. The intimacy of the Whisenhunt Stage puts the audience in such close proximity to the actors and the aerialists that it will be a theatrical experience like no other.”

ZACH’s production stars Andy Agne, Aaron Alexander, Margaret Carter, David Christopher, Smaranda Ciceu, Stephanie Dunnam, Sarah Gay, Jonathan Itchon, Ashley Neves, Wesley Scott, Stefania Tafuro, Dirk Van Allen, Rachel Wiese, Frederic Winkler and Will Zinser.

ZACH’s production of METAMORPHOSES is choreographed by Nicole Whiteside of Blue Lapis Light, an Austin-based aerial dance company. Founded in 2005, the company strives to transcend athleticism and capture poetic movements.

Zach Theatre extends The Drowsy Chaperone to August 29 Print E-mail

Full text of Z-news e-mail with interview of Martin Burke, lead in The Drowsy Chaperone, announcing the four-week extension of the show, to August 29.  You can sign up for the Zach's periodic e-mails at their website, www.zachtheatre.org

Star Martin Burke Tells All About THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

Martin Burke as Man in Chair in ZACH's THE DROWSY CHAPERONEThe ‘Man in Chair' is a Broadway fanatic who plays host to THE DROWSY CHAPERONE musical as the vibrant production springs to life in his apartment. Martin Burke, who plays Man in Chair in ZACH's production, tells us a bit about his role and what a thrill ride it has been for him and Austin audiences.

Martin has one of the best gigs in Austin live theatre: "It's a joy to sit and watch the actors, dancers and musicians every night," he said. "But I have to watch myself, too. Sometimes I'll get caught up in the show and forget that I'm on stage, mouthing all the words to all the songs in the show and mimicking the choreography."

"It feels like you're catching me in one of those bathroom moments that I never meant for anyone to see." Man in Chair starts the show complaining about all the things he hates in theatre: actors going into the audience, audience members getting up to go the bathroom; and the irony of it all, Martin said, is that "the Man in Chair does everything that he hates."

Director Nick Demos, who recently won a Tony Award as producer of the musical MEMPHIS, and the wonderfully talented cast in ZACH's production have made this show, Martin's first performance in an Austin theatre musical, "very comfortable." "Nick has taught me a lot about acting and dealing with the audiences. From working in The Santaland Diaries for several years at ZACH, my tendency was to get really worked up when I got heckled. In this production, I've learned to just let them be, and it makes the show so dynamic and different from night to night."

Jill Blackwood as Janet Van de Graaff with Man in Chair Mimicking Her Every MoveMartin recalls years watching Jill Blackwood raise the roof in other Austin theatre productions, particularly at ZACH, and now has a front row seat every night watching her "sing with her lips wide open but still moving just like Barbra Streisand." He noted: "Do people really know that Jill (who plays Janet Van de Graaff) actually does play all the instruments in the musical number ‘Show Off'? Well, she does."

"My favorite moments in the musical are when something goes wrong with the record and the show suddenly stops. It's when I'm reminded that I'm actually an actor playing an actor who's playing a man in a musical," he said.

"I also love the line ‘It's better to have lived than left'" when trying to figure out the words The Drowsy Chaperone (played by Meredith McCall) meant to say at a moment with the record of the musical accidentally skips. "It's interesting that he doesn't consider that she could've meant ‘love.' It really adds poignancy and depth to the Man in Chair's character."

By popular demand, ZACH Theatre has extended THE DROWSY CHAPERONE run through August 29, opening up excellent seats for Austin live theatre audiences. Perfect for friends, family and out of town guests, tickets are available online and by phone at (512) 476-0541, ext. 1.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a family-friendly musical comedy with tons of laughs and winner of the most 2006 Tony Awards of any musical on Broadway! A hilarious, zany and yet poignant tale of a celebrity bride and her uproarious wedding day, The Drowsy Chaperone is full of thrills and surprises that take the cast and audience soaring to the rafters.

Director Nick Demos says “In the original Broadway production of
The Drowsy Chaperone, the character of the Man in The Chair, who is a die-hard musical fan, plays his favorite cast album, a 1928 hit called ‘The Drowsy Chaperone,’ to lift his spirits and the musical magically bursts to life in his living room. In ZACH’s original production, the Man in The Chair takes an active roll in facilitating the action, helping bring the characters from the album to life and serving as the audience’s guide, giving them fun facts, insights and loads of tongue-in-cheek humor.”

Martin Burke, star of ZACH’s The Santaland Diaries and Take Me Out, will star as the Man in The Chair in ZACH’s production. “Martin is such a loveable guy,” adds Demos. “The audience is going to really enjoy the ride that he takes them on.” Audience favorites Jill Blackwood, Meredith McCall, and Jamie Goodwin also star in ZACH’s production which features 23 of Austin’s finest professional singers, dancers and musicians. This production features musical direction by Allen Robertson (of The Biscuit Brothers) and choreography by the award-winning Robin Lewis.

An original comedy, Becky's New Car tells the life-affirming story of an eccentric millionaire who offers Becky the keys to a brand new life. This romantic farce offers a fantastically funny exploration of class, wealth and selling out during Becky’s wild ride though a clever twist of events. Huge laughs, hairpin plot turns and a story with the pedal to the metal is sure to delight Austin audiences and inspire them to live more fiercely. Buckle up!

Becky's New Car was commissioned by Seattle arts funder Charlie Staadecker as a birthday present to his wife, Benita. The play was originally produced by ACT Theatre in Seattle, Washington, and has since played on stages coast to coast. Charlie and Benita are having a terrific ride with Becky's New Car. They are flying to every opening of the play across the country (including Austin), seeing new incarnations of their “gift that keeps on giving,” says Charlie. “This is the best return we’ve made on an investment in our lives.”

Lauren Lane, star of TV’s The Nanny and ZACH’s The Clean House, will star in ZACH’s production. “Lauren Lane is a gem,” says Dietz. “She has that amazing mix of charm, poise and fire, and I jumped at the chance to cast her as Becky.” ZACH’s production also stars Lucien Douglas, Babs George, Sydney Andrews, Josh Meyer, Ben Prager and Chris Gibson.

Also, Becky isn’t the only person getting a new car! ZACH is selling $50 raffle tickets for a chance to win a $50,000 credit at Mercedes-Benz of Austin. The drawing will be held at the final performance on July 11. To learn about the raffle and how to enter to win, visit http://www.zachtheatre.org/donate/mercedes.
